Have Your Say on the NSC 54% Rate Increase

Submissions close with IPART on the 9th March, 2026

On the 19th January, 2026 North Sydney Council voted 7 to 3 for a 54% rate rise and a rise in the minimum rate (minimum rates affect units where a lot of dwellings share a small amount of rateable land).  North Sydney Council has applied to IPART to approve this Special Rate Variation. Of the ten Councils applying for a SRV, NSC is the largest SRV by some margin.  As can be imagined, this not insignificant figure has created a lot of controversy, with many residents having  opinions.

Whatever your opinion, you can have a say at this link to – IPART. The initials IPART stand for the NSW Governments Independent Pricing And Regulatory Tribunal. This is the organisation which  denied NSC any increase at all last year when they asked for an 87% increase.

We have been asked by members from both sides of this discussion to pass on reference material, which we will do for a small number.

If you would like to put in a submission that Yes, I Want An Increase, we believe no one can speak better for the reason for the increase than Council themselves.

Please look on Council’s website for their YES discussion points – NSC.

If you would like to put in a submission that No, I Don’t Want An Increase, we have selected two discussion papers.

There is a very detailed an extensive paper prepared by Lavender Precinct, detailing the NO case. It is here – NO by LP

There is a very succinct paper by a member giving reasons for the NO case.  It is here – NO by JL

Whatever side you wish to support, please make sure you are heard. Please lodge by the 9th March 2026 at IPART. Your voice matters.

Low and Mid Rise Housing Policy

On the 10th February 2026 Neutral Precinct was fortunate to have Meredith Trevalyn Jones as a guest speaker and presented on the subject of the NSW Governments Low and Mid Rise Housing Policy. She used current examples which are happening right now in Neutral Bay and were of great interest to all attending.

We have reproduced here presentation slides in their entirety below.
